UM receives book donation from Portugal (2025-05-26)
The University of Macau (UM) offered two books to the Casa de Bragança
Foundation in Portugal in February 2025, namely, “Relação Oficial da
Embaixada do Rei D. João V de Portugal ao Imperador Yongzheng em 1725-1728”
and the Chinese translation of “Os Lusíadas”, to enrich their
collection. Recently, the UM Library has received a donation of books from the
Casa de Bragança Foundation in Portugal, a gesture made in reply to UM’s offer.
The books will provide students, faculty, and readers with valuable cultural and
academic resources.
The donation from the Foundation comprises three books: Camões nos Prelos
de Portugal e da Europa (1563-2000), A Biblioteca Camoniana de D. Manuel II,
and A Biblioteca Camoniana de D. Manuel II: Catálogo Bibliográfico. Together, these three books provide a comprehensive study of the works
of the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, as well as his significance in
Portuguese and European culture. They are of great value to researchers in
literature, history, and culture.
Notably, A Biblioteca Camoniana de D. Manuel II includes a reference to
the rare book recently acquired by the UM Library, Os Lusiadas do Grande Luis
de Camoens, Principe da Poesia Heroica, which was published in 1613. During his
visit to UM, José Cardoso Bernardes, professor in the Faculty of Letters at the
University of Coimbra, attached an autographed explanatory note to the book, of
which he is the coordinator of its compilation. Prof Bernardes is an expert in
Camões studies, the commissioner general of the Commemorations of the 5th
Centenary of the Birth of Luís de Camões, and a member of the Centre for
Portuguese Literature at the University of Coimbra.
