Library News — Documentary Film Chinese White Dolphin Screening and Post-Screening Sharing Session Successfully Held at the University Gallery (2026-10-22)
The documentary film Chinese White Dolphin screening and post-screening sharing session, jointly organized by the UM Library, Cheong Kun Lun College, and Lui Che Woo College, was successfully held recently (21 October) at the University Gallery Auditorium (E1). Guests in attendance included Billy Leung, Assistant University Librarian of the UM Library; Benjamin Choi, representative of Lui Che Woo College; Shen Zhenghai, Director of the External Communication and Visual Operation Center at Zhuhai Media Group; Zhang Hao, Director of the External Communication and Visual Operation Center at Zhuhai Media Group; and Henry Yang, Functional Head of the UM Library. The event was hosted by Molly Lei, Reference Librarian of the UM Library.
Produced over a period of six years, Chinese White Dolphin is the world’s first documentary film featuring the Chinese white dolphin as its main subject. A spiritual companion piece to the documentary Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the film is jointly produced by China Media Group, Guangdong Radio and Television Station, and Zhuhai Media Group. The film crew conducted research at the University of Macau Library, which provided key information for the film regarding the naming of the Chinese white dolphin. Centered on the homecoming journey of a dolphin named “Zhuzhu,” the film follows the documentary crew and researchers as they track its migration route, authentically presenting the journey of this nationally protected first-class animal as it temporarily leaves its habitat and eventually returns. It also reflects the deep contemplation on balancing economic development and ecological conservation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The event invited the documentary’s production team, directors Zhang Hao and Shen Zhenghai, to share their insights. After the screening, Directors Zhang and Shen spoke about the origins of the project, the hardships of field tracking, and the behind-the-lens reverence for the dignity of life. Students present expressed keen interest in the balance between human environments and dolphin conservation, and commended the six-year filming journey for its dedication. The dialogue was lively and engaging.
The UM Library is committed to extending reading from print to diverse media such as film. Through such “Visual Reading” events and close collaboration with colleges, the Library guides students and faculty to engage with knowledge and reality from another dimension.
