Library News --“Walking into 60 Years of Macau Workers’ Cultural Performances History (1950-2010)” Historical Photo Exhibition Successfully Held at UM Library (2026-04-29)

Co-organized by the Macau Federation of Trade Unions and the Macau Library and Information Management Association, and co-hosted by the University of Macau Library, the special exhibition “Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions: Walking into 60 Years of Macau Workers’ Cultural Performances History (1950-2010)” was held at the University of Macau Library from April 23 to May 31, 2026.

Through a large number of precious historical photographs, newspaper clippings, performance posters, stage photos, books and artifacts, the exhibition vividly presented the 60-year development journey of Macau workers’ Cultural Performances activities — from scratch to strength — attracting many students, citizens and arts enthusiasts to visit.

The exhibition systematically reviewed workers’ Cultural Performances activities across different historical periods, including the organization of singing and drama training classes by the Federation of Trade Unions in the 1950s, the opening of the Workers’ Recreation Hall in 1956, as well as large-scale performances of Cantonese operas such as Shajiabang and Dujuan Shan during the 1960s and 1970s. It also featured the revolutionary song and dance epic The East Is Red, among other classic patriotic works.

The exhibition also showcased the diversified development of workers’ arts in the post-reform and opening-up period, including dance performances such as Sri Lankan Pot Dance and The Moon over the River on a Spring Night, achievements of the new generation of drama troupes, and the contributions of the arts teams in public welfare activities, disaster relief fundraising, and cross-regional exchanges. Some panels also linked to the centennial history of Macau nursing education under the theme “From Person to Benevolence”, demonstrating the integration of arts with education and social service.

This exhibition not only systematically traced the development trajectory of Macau workers’ Cultural Performances history, but also created a strong atmosphere of patriotic education, effectively enhancing visitors’ cultural identity and sense of historical mission.

The exhibition will conclude on May 31, 2026. All are welcome to visit the University of Mau Library during the exhibition period.
